Lumen- Empress of the Americas by Ignacio Davila

  • Prince of Peace Catholic Newman Center 4502 20th Avenue Northeast Seattle, WA, 98105 United States (map)

Why has Our Lady of Guadalupe been called the “Empress of the Americas”? And why did Saint John Paul II describe the Guadalupan Event as the “perfectly inculturated” model of evangelization? In this presentation, we will weave together the biblical imagery of Revelation, the historical upheavals of the 15th–17th centuries, and the compelling story of the 1531 apparitions to Saint Juan Diego. We will then “read” the tilma, its symbols, language, and cultural meaning, to see how Guadalupe became a uniquely powerful bridge between worlds, promoting peace, human dignity, and unity among peoples, and inspiring a living devotion that continues today, including a call to monthly prayer leading up to the 500th anniversary in 2031.

Similar to Theology on Tap, a Lumen event is when we host a young adult or outside speaker, but then chant Night Prayer together (called “Compline”) with the Dominican Friars. This is followed by our social, when we share a refreshing pint of beer or non-alcoholic drink.

The speaker begins at 7pm sharp (plan to arrive a bit early) and the social ends at 10pm.

*** If you plan to leave before 10PM, you MUST park at UW parking lot N5 (5 min walk away), or else your car will be double parked in.
