Lumen Speaker & Pub Series. Panel Discussion "How to Talk About Gender & Sexuality"

  • Prince of Peace Catholic Newman Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Similar to Theology on Tap, a Lumen event is when we host a young adult or outside speaker, but also chant night prayer together (called “Compline”) with the Dominican Friars. This is followed by our social, when we share a refreshing pint of beer or non-alcoholic drink. The topic and speaker for this date will be released in the future (usually at least 2 weeks beforehand)

This week, join us for a panel featuring Catholics who’ve had LGBTQ+ experiences as they share their perspectives on navigating this topic within the Catholic faith. We will explore how to foster honest, compassionate conversations about the Church’s teaching on gender and sexuality while respecting human dignity.

Pre-Selected Questions: What is the official Catholic Church’s teaching on SSA/GD?

How has this experience impacted your faith journey?

If there’s someone in my life who I think experiences SSA and is struggling with Church teaching, how do I walk (and talk) with them in faith?

Would this be any different for someone who isn’t a Catholic?

Can I direct someone who I think would benefit from being in this group to you all?

The speaker begins at 7pm sharp (plan to arrive a bit early) and the pub social ends at 10pm.

*** If you plan to leave before 10PM, you MUST park at UW parking lot N5 (5 min walk away), or else your car will be double parked in.

This is followed by our social, when we share a refreshing pint of beer or non-alcoholic drink (though this week, we the social will be held at a nearby pub afterwards).

This weeks Lumen will be … “Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response”

Stewardship is more than just giving to the Church—it’s a personal and spiritual response to God’s invitation. But how do we discern how and how much we are called to give? This talk will explore the biblical roots of stewardship, its spiritual significance in the life of a disciple, and practical ways ordinary Catholics can approach this call with intention and freedom. The evening will begin with a prayer on stewardship led by Gizelle Gando, Associate Director of Frassati, followed by a talk from Chris Hanzeli that weaves together Scripture, Church teaching, and engaging real-life stories to help us better understand what stewardship can look like in our daily lives.About the Speaker: Chris Hanzeli is a former UW Newman Peer Minister, a father of four, and a parishioner at Blessed Sacrament. He holds a Master’s in Philanthropy and Development from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota, previously served at the Newman Center for six years, and has worked with the Western Dominican Province for the past eleven years.

The speaker begins at 7pm sharp (plan to arrive a bit early). After the compline we will head to a pub outside of Newman. Due to wine tasting we be in chapel for the talk and compline.
