Lumen: Dr. James Felak, “Thinking Historically about Catholicism”

  • Prince of Peace Catholic Newman Center 4502 20th Avenue Northeast Seattle, WA, 98105 United States (map)

Frassati Young Adult’s Lumen events is when we come together to enlighten our minds, hearts, and spirits. We meet on a Thursday nights at UW Newman (usually twice a month) for a presentation, followed by chanting Compline/night prayer in the chapel, followed by social time with some drinks and food in Frassati Lounge.

This Thursday, we’ll have our very own Dr. James Felak (Catholic Studies professor at UW).

Professor James Felak is the Newman Center Term Professor in Catholic Christianity as well as Professor of History at the University of Washington, where he has been teaching since 1989.  His specialties are the history of modern East Central Europe and the history of Catholicism.  His most recent publication is a book-length study of the visits of Pope John Paul II to his native Poland during and immediately following the Communist period.  He regularly teaches the History of Christianity and a course entitled “Catholic Classics in Historical Context” at UW.

In this lecture, Dr. Felak is intends to help Catholics understand their faith historically, and is informed above all by the thought of St. John Henry Newman and his idea of the development of doctrine.
