For the complete directions of the Washington State Catholic Conference about public Masses see their Plan for Limited Reopening of Masses in Washington State.
Also, see this poster summarizing the changes you will see at Masses once they start.
May, 29th, 2020: Archbishop Paul Etienne published a video about efforts to reopen Masses in the archdiocese and about safety precautions to be followed when Masses restart. The archdiocese also published guidelines for parishes to use in preparing a safety plan which needs to be approved by the local deanery in order to reopen Masses.
May, 27th, 2020: The bishops of the Washington State Catholic Conference announced that the governor’s office has given directions on how to begin again to have public religious services. The Bishops indicated that even when Masses restart, the obligation to attend Sunday Mass is still dispensed. Also, those who are especially vulnerable to COVID-19 are highly encouraged to stay home, and anyone with symptoms or a fever must not attend. When Masses restart, safety precautions will include having shorter Masses with no singing, maintaining six feet between households, receiving Communion (after the end of Mass) in the hand only, and wearing masks at Mass.
May, 22th, 2020:
Dear Newman community:
No doubt by now, most of you have heard President Trump’s announcement that because religious services are essential – and indeed they are - they can open this Sunday.
I know that everyone in our Catholic community is excited by this announcement, but the reality is that having Mass this Sunday is unrealistic until a safety plan for all parishes is set in place by our Archdiocese.
My hope is that as a community we understand that the Bishops in our state are working hard to see that that all of us can return safely to our communities of worship.
Please be patient, we will soon have some guidelines that will allow us to worship in a responsible manner.
I and Fr. Marcin are looking forward to being with all of you at the Newman Center.
In Christ, who is the Prince of Peace,
Fr. Jordan, OP
Update on May 5th, 2020: Due to the “shelter in place” order from Governor Inslee, the Newman Center will be closed until further notice. All Adoration and Confession times are cancelled.
We ask that all members of our community do their part in preventing the spread of coronavirus by staying home if they are unwell or have any symptoms, as well as by practicing good hygiene of washing hands and covering coughs and sneezes. We also ask that you if you venture out to procure essential supplies, please maintain 6ft of distance from others and try to minimize contact with surfaces.
Staff members are working remotely for the time being, but can be contacted via email. We appreciate your prayers as we discern the best ways to continue our ministry during this time! Until further notice, all in-person program events such as Veritas, Lumen, Freshman Group, and Stations of the Cross have been cancelled.
